In a world where we are constantly chasing the next adventure, Australia’s coastline remains a frontier of raw, untamed beauty. Through the lens of Guy Williment, a Northern Beaches photographer who has turned his passion for the ocean into a career, we discover south coast surf spots and get inspired for adventures in 2025.
Tell us a bit about yourself, where you live, why you live where you live (is it for the outdoor adventure spots nearby?) What your favourite hobbies/ adventure activities are.
Hey Team! Hope you guys are well.
My name is Guy Williment, I’m a photographer, film maker and outdoorsman that has been lucky enough to turn my passion and something that started as a hobby into my job.
I grew up in Avalon Beach, on the Northern Beaches of Sydney and still call it home today. I’ve been lucky enough to get to travel a lot over the years but still love coming back home. It’s a quiet little surf town with a really tight knit community, plenty of good waves, some fun rock climbing, trail running areas and pretty much where all my closest friends live.

1. What is your favourite adventure spot and why?
Gosh that’s a hard one haha. There are so many, but I think for me my favourite adventure spot would have to be travelling down the South Coast to chase waves when the surf is good. Anywhere between Wollongong and Batemans Bay on the right swell direction we get some incredibly good surf on the East Coast of Aus.
2. What is it about this place that you love so much (e.g is it the flora and fauna, is it nostalgic, is it the local wildlife, is it the views etc ??)
The South Coast is home to some pretty incredibly beautiful yet intimidating and heavy waves. When you go down there chasing a swell and the conditions line up, it’s hard not to be in awe of the beauty and power of the ocean.
It still feels very wild and raw down there. Surrounded by gum trees, huge expansive beaches with hundreds of kangaroos in sight, it’s a special part of the world.

3. What different kinds of adventures have you done in this spot?
I’m usually shooting surfers out in the line up at this one particular wave. It breaks over 1km out to sea in the middle of the ocean so it’s a pretty daunting place to swim and it really only breaks when it’s really big. But on its day it’s one of the wildest waves in Australia.
4. What are some of your favourite memories adventuring in this spot?
There is 1 particular shot I got of my friend Matt Dunsmore on a pretty wild wave. I thought the wave was going to land on my head but I managed to sneak a few shots in before having to swim under it before it exploded on me haha. It was one of the best waves I’ve ever seen ridden in my life.

5. What are the do’s and don’t, or the tips and tricks that you would tell someone who was going here for the first time?
Respect the locals, take your trash. Leave the place better than you found it.
Whether you’re wanting to get into water photography or surfing, I would make sure you have plenty of experience in the ocean before getting yourself into the big stuff. I’ve been in the water surfing since I was about 11 and I’m now 31, so I’ve definitely had my fair share of scary and humbling moments in the ocean over the years haha. I think a big thing is knowing your own limits.
For me, I always try to keep fit, doing breathwork training and have my gear super dialed in before getting in the water for a big swell.
6. What are the essential gear items that you take with you for this activity?
Underwater Housing, with my Canon R5, wetsuit, flippers and a little bit of liquid courage haha.
7. Tell us one of your bucket list adventure spots in Australia that you are dying to go and explore?
Hmmmm, I absolutely love dolphins haha, so anywhere you could swim with dolphins out in the wild is near the top of my list.
If you know any good spots, please let me know haha! (we sure do, its all in the map- get yours here)
