Sometimes the most extraordinary moments in ocean photography aren’t meticulously planned – they’re gifted to us by the sea itself. This year’s signature image, featuring a massive sperm whale calf and acclaimed freediver Marianne Aventurier, captures one such serendipitous encounter that showcases the mesmerising underwater choreography for which she has become renowned, with her latest film premiering at this year’s Ocean Film Festival.
Aventurier, whose journey from Mediterranean-born psycho-motor therapist to renowned underwater performer has captivated audiences worldwide, appears in perfect harmony with the marine giant. It’s a fitting representation of her lifelong dedication to showcasing the delicate dance between humans and marine life. Along with her partner, underwater photographer Alex Voyer, she has made French Polynesia’s waters her stage, trading traditional dance floors for the boundless blue of the open ocean.
The scene captured in this image tells a remarkable story of trust between species. While the mother sperm whale dove to the ocean’s depths for her hunt, her curious calf found unlikely babysitters in Aventurier and Voyer. What followed was a rare and magical interaction that perfectly embodies both the spirit of the Ocean Film Festival’s mission and Aventurier’s artistic vision – celebrating the profound connection possible between humans and marine life.
Against the deep blue backdrop of open ocean waters, we see the magnificent scale of this encounter – the young whale’s enormous form dwarfing Aventurier’s graceful silhouette above. Despite their size difference, there’s a palpable sense of gentle curiosity and playful interaction between the two. The contrast creates a compelling visual narrative about the delicate balance of human presence in the marine world.
As the encounter progressed, the young whale’s personality began to shine through. Initially cautious, it grew increasingly confident, eventually showing typical calf behaviour by playfully investigating the divers’ equipment – attempting to nibble at Aventurier’s monofin and nudge at the camera. Such moments of uninhibited interaction offer precious insights into the social nature of these intelligent marine mammals.
When Aventurier and Voyer eventually decided to retreat to their boat, the persistent calf followed, gently pushing at the vessel as if inviting its new playmates back into the water. This behaviour, while charming, also demonstrates the importance of responsible wildlife interaction – a principle that Aventurier, as both an artist and marine conservationist, champions in her work.
This image, selected as our festival’s signature piece for 2025, captures more than just a moment; it embodies the essence of respectful marine encounters and the profound connections possible between humans and ocean dwellers. Through Aventurier and Voyer’s artistic lens – both in this photograph and in their captivating cinematography – we’re reminded that in the vast blue expanses of our oceans, magic happens when we approach marine life with respect, patience, and wonder.
